Soft Shackle AKA Rope Shackle – Safe and Inexpensive offroad gear
Features:-
The Rope Shackle (Soft Shackle) is the perfect replacement for traditional metal snap shackles and screw shackles.
The Soft Shackle needs no tools and is easy to open and close.
Their light and soft properties will not damage paintwork and do not corrode or rust.
They tighten under tension, yet are easy to open when relaxed.
Sand particles or dust is not going to hamper the operations of Soft Shackle
Their soft properties mean that they will not chaffe wear points.
They are extremely light compared to heavy end fittings, yet are very strong (for eg:- 5mm polyester shackle has a break load of 1.5 tons)Advantages:-
No damage to the car and personnel, even if it breaks.
10 x lighter than a metal shackle with equivalent breaking strength.
Easy fit in at small and curved access.

How to use a Soft Shackle
1. Pull out the core in the eye to make it large enough to place over the knot.
2. Place the knot through the eye
3. Milk back the cover from the knot to the eye to close the shackle.How to use the Quick Release
Soft shackles may be provided with a quick release cord.The release cord will open the eye easily when pulled.
This is actually a very nice “Twist” 😉 on the metal shackle, as it eliminates most of the cons associated with metal shackles.
I have actually seen metal Shackles penetrate metal doors and destroy vehicles upon the tow rope breaking.
I have seen some very close calls to personnel as well, though, thankfully never any injuries…though…with the sort of momentum that these carry…they will definitely inflict very severe, possibly fatal injuries.
One of the recent cases was when Thanseer’s Nissan Patrol broke down near Al Faya, and both the rear doors were destroyed due to a flying metal shackle.
Ajay (Sikri) has been using these soft shackles for a few years now with good results.
I had a similar experience when I used to go offloading on my own before joining Dubai off roader’s, where once I got badly stuck at big red a passing by Cherokee offered to tow me out and the rope snapped while pulling and the metal shackle hit my front glass and cracked.

Just for my curiosity: Would it be better to have a soft shackle with lower rating then your snatchstrap or higher? In other words, which part do we want to fail first? The strap or the shackle. In case of a metal shackle I think I would want my strap to fail instead of the shackle because that would be less dangerous. But what about when we use a soft shackle?

But what about when we use a soft shackle?In my experience, I have seen shackles failing the most, followed by recovery straps/winch cable. This is probably because a) very few people use rated shackles and b) many a times, shackles are put into the recovery point in such a way that the shackle bolt takes the contact with the metal recovery point, and hence takes the load at its weakest link.
Moreover, we talk about shackle risks more often because the broken pieces of shackle fly like bullets and are prone to hit people in all directions and that too far away from the site of the accident . A broken strap can also be fatal if someone is standing within its range, but this range is limited to the length of the flying strap. Therefore a broken shackle is potentially more dangerous than a broken strap. A soft shackle is also prone to breakage if stretched beyond its capacity but doesn’t hurt anyone except the pocket 😉 of its owner.
In any case, what fails more often doesn’t and should not matter. Our choice of equipment should be such that we have enough margin-of-safety in terms of load being pulled. From this angle, both shackle and strap should be rated for a MINIMUM of 150% (preferably 200%) of the all-up weight of the stuck vehicle.

for our requirements, 6 ton is good enough, but are these prices for a pair or per piece. these shackles generally come in pairs, so please check out
I had the chance to use one of these this past weekend. Ajay recently picked some up from the US and we go to test it on a recovery. It worked very nicely and very quick. Aside from all of the benefits listed in this thread, it takes 2 seconds to hook up as oppose to fiddling with the shackle bolt. I am planning to order a pair for myself so if anyone would like a pair (you should have 2 for each end of your rope) please let me know and I will order for you too. The price is $42.99 each. I will be shipping through my Aramex Shop to Ship account so we can just split the shipping costs. I would like to place the order in the next week or two so please let me know ASAP. Thanks.

@matthewficco these are also available locally on this site http://www.blingmytruck.com/category/106-recovery-straps-equipment.aspx and also can be found at Icon Auto.I have from both locations and would urge all members to invest in these. Far safer, less stress on the vehicle and easier to use by far.
