The Season is on again….and in the right earnest too!!!
What Better way to welcome the onset of the off Roading season than a visit to that mother of all deserts the Rub Al Khaali…meaning The Empty Quarter…in plain English???
The National Day Holiday’s long weekend is the perfect opportunity to go and say Hello to the Majestic Sands & Dunes of Liwa.
Here is a very nice video compilation of visit to Liwa in late 2010, very kindly contributed by Mr. Silvester Petras. The Rub’ al Khali (Arabic: الربع الخالي) or Empty Quarter is one of the largest sand deserts in the world, encompassing most of the southern third of the Arabian Peninsula, including southern Saudi Arabia, and areas of Oman, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen. The desert covers some 650,000 square kilometres , Liwa Oasis is about 100 km south of the Arabian Gulf coast and 150 km SSW of the city of Abu Dhabi, on the northern edge of Rub’ al Khali desert and stretches about 100 km east-west, along an arch curved to the north.
The geographic and economic center of the oasis is Mizair’a, where the highway from Abu Dhabi enters the oasis and then divides to the east (65 km to the easternmost village, Mahdar Bin `Usayyan) and west (45 km to the westernmost village, `Aradah). The villages of Liwa Oasis are the southernmost settlements of Abu Dhabi and of the United Arab Emirates. The southern border of Abu Dhabi with Saudi Arabia, which runs at a distance between 16 and 35 km to the Oasis, is a straight line in the Rub al Khali desert, which is largely uninhabited.

Come on Guys…This is going to be one of the most interesting trips of this year!!!Ahmed, we have a couple of questions:
Do you have an itinerary of the whole drive? Distance (hours) from the meeting point to the entrance to Liwa desert, lunch while driving…, time we will be leaving next morning, lunch next day, etc?
Where will people from Abu Dhabi meet us? We have a couple of friends from AD that will join us

We start at 0745 from Emarat at Jebel Ali & enter the desert after a 3.5 hours drive that will also include a re-fuel at the petrol station at the Car Museum. The first day drive will be a 6 hour drive so that we reach the camping site with enough time to set up tents etc.
ON SECOND DAY
We will go to a nearby ADNOC station at Hameem in the morning to re-fuel & we can use the toilets at the petrol station, too, if required, especially for the ladies.
We will have breakfast at a restaurant in Hameem & pick up some sandwiches for Lunch too…the drive back will be towards Dubai so that we will emerge near Car Museum & will then proceed home, to reach Dubai/ Sharjah by approx. 7-8pm.Members joining in from Abu Dhabi may assemble at Adnoc Mafraq & keep their radios on at Channel 4 at 0830AM on Friday the 30th of November 2012, they can join the Convoy as it passes the main road in Mafraq.
During the Apollo challenge Khalil proposed that if we few members are interested we can leave on Thursday 0evening around 7PM and have an extra night of full moon camping at a designated place of entry in Liwa. After a refreshing night you can get enough rest till res of the team members arrive. ( GPS coordintes requested from Mr. pervez) Please post if any one interested in this proposal.
