Fantastic drive, enjoyed it to the max … The little Prado did very well, I will discribe its performance in another tread.
It was very hard to get up that early, but it was worth it, as by 9am, we started to become incomfortable outside (42 deg)I will leave the full report to the pro ๐
Amazing drive!!!! Now I fully understand the reason for Ahmed Bhai being very particular for a small convoy and chosen drivers ๐ I am sure we all enjoyed the drive to the max :drive: :drive: :drive: It was a kind of drive, which we have been waiting for a long time. The whole drive was a perfect combination of technique, driving skill, pace and good understanding and communication among the members :ymapplause: :ymapplause: :ymapplause: Thanks Ahmed Bhai for the wonderful lead and making this drive so enjoyable. :thanks:
As scheduled, we hit the sand by 6am from Badayer shops heading towards Iftar bowl through tricky soft sand patches and high dunes. Ahmed Bhai was on the lead along with Brian and we three Khalil, Satwinder and myself were taking different positions in the convoy as we wish ๐ since more or less the drive was a Marshals Run.
Though we had couple of stuck and one pop out, the recovery was so quick that we never felt it as a task. Brian – we could see a little rusting to your skills because of your long break from sand. We were far ahead of our schedule to reach Iftar bowl, played for a while and headed towards Badayer shops since the temperature was around 44 degrees. Also we met couple of other offroaders group during the drive and got introduced as well.
Khalil was on a specific mission to test his new toy – Landcruiser Prado. We could see Khalil who normally “fly around” the dunes with his wrangler, “climbing” dunes with his new Prado. ๐ But in a very short while, he mastered the trick and adapted to the new toy… amazing and very quick transformation :ymapplause: :ymapplause: :ymapplause: I am sure he will be happy about his choice, as we all noticed the vehicle performing really good.
On the way to Badayer shops, Satwinder spotted Kashmirji’s convoy on top of big red. Myself and Satwinder were crazy to take the decision for another drive ๐ We two, climbed big red and joined the other convoy. Then it was a “rocket drive” to Pink Rock and to Tawi Nazwa. I should say it was a tough challenge to follow that jeep convoy. They were like bugs on sand ๐ฎ But it was a happy challenge to achieve, without spoiling my car.
This route and driving style is never recommended from a safety point of view, with an exception for Jeep, especially for fewbie ++ or below. I wouldn’t have been surprised, if there was a roll over. But the convoy was of handpicked expert drivers, who were doing really good. Due to this tough route (I will say jeep route) I could see LWB vehicles with broken bumpers, damaged radiators and a bad pop out, which teared off the tyre ๐ฎ
Managed to reach the tarmac safely and happily by 11am, inflated and headed home.
Thanks to Satwinder for facilitating this wonderful opportunity and experience :thanks:
Thank you all once again for making today’s drive a wonderful one :thanks:
May 18, 2012 at 12:39 pm #17053Thanks for the nice report Kumar…
Today’s drive and convoy was the kind of Drive that every lead wants to have…No Hiccups, No Drama, No mishaps…just smooth, fast, technical driving…
and as the title says…we actually covered the Tops of most Dunes between Badayer till the Iftar Bowl…and were back on Tarmac just after nine.
Thanks everybody !!!Thanks a lot for a great drive Ahmed, I was in awe of your technique and privileged to see it first hand… However the moment I’ve tried to imitate it, it left me like a fish out of water…
But I’m determined to get it right, so different from what we’ve learned till date.
G.Kumar, right you are sir. I definitely have to become more regular… and aim to do so.
Se you’ll at the next one.
