    Dear Gerry,

Can we postpone this/arrange on 2nd of Eid? i.e on 20th Monday. That would be wonderful from our Marshal’s Part.

    Happy EID.

    Love,
    FIROZ

hi guys. just wanted to ask: couple of my friends want to come along for a joyride on this trip. Considering im still very much a rookie driver, is it safe for me to bring them along in my car?

I am back! Looking forward to hitting the sand again.

You can bring them along Satyen. Just let the marshals decide whether they ride in your car throughout the trip or if the marshals want to distribute them differently.

Couple of my friends are joining with us in a seprate 4×4; hope we can accomodate them in our convoy.

    Trip Report
    Monday morning drive – 20/08/2012

We had a total of 5 cars, while the 6th car for safety reasons decided to stay behind and the passengers were redistributed. The convoy took off towards pink rock at 6:30. Sidesloping all the way to pink rock and then crossing over to the opposite side, playing around in the dunes trying to climb the highest point. Everyone driving well and having loads of fun! The convoy then proceeded back over pink rock to return via the same route. We were on track to hit the tarmac at 8:30. Then we had a stuck, satyen was stuck in a soft sand patch. Rob tried to winch him out, but the very very soft sand did not allow him to get away let alone satyen.Ricardo then brought his jeep attached robs winch and pulled him out!! :ymapplause: :ymapplause: #:-s I tried to get back to pull satyen and lo behold 2 cars stuck now in very soft sand! 😮
Rob tried again to winch the patrol out from the opposite side, the winch was just not cooperating :-s :-s . Electrical issues. In trying to get me out Rob was down again and
The heat was getting to all of us by then, with a few of us experiencing exhaustion.
Firoz parked his car, so that my winch could get us out, and my winch rope broke!! :(( :(( :(( Now we were in a real soup.
Now 2 cars stuck no winch, stuck in a bowl with more bowls on both sides. We tried to use robs winch again, but it just would not pull satyen out completely. As me and satyen were stuck together, thought i could get out with my diff locks and then attempt to pull him out. Worst decision, because now my car blocked his path to take a runup!! :-s
Finally as a last ditch we tried to use firoz to tow satyen from the opposite side, because dowhill would be easier, for that Firoz needed a run up inside the bowl, one wrong turn instead of gaining momentum and Firoz joined our club!

Time was running out for us, and then we finally decided to join 3 ropes, and then rob tried towing satyens patrol out. 3 attempts later, satyen was out!!
We then used Satyens patrol to pull me out, and then I used my car to pull firoz out. We hit the tarmac at 12:30 taking a straight line approach, everyone exhausted but still happy to gain this expereince nevertheless.
Thanks to Rob, Firoz and Ricardo. Rob especially was fantastic, pulling both satyen and me out. :ymapplause: :ymapplause: :ymapplause:

Well driven by satyen- you were really driving well till you got into the bowl. An experience none of of will forget. But getting out of such a situation with only pulling and no winches is an achievement for all of you guys. well done! :ymapplause: :ymapplause: :ymapplause: :ymapplause:

Nice report Gerry! What a drive! In and out of the sand was very nice, but getting all cars out from the bowl was an amazing experience. The kind you rather not have, but once you do….WOW…not even 20 drives would give us that experience. I really thought we would never get out from there without additional help. We made some bad decisions, but we are here to learn! I must say that Satyen drove like a pro. Moving from a Wrangler to a Patrol is really an achievement.
I drove 2 Patrols and a FJ in just one morning :D…and also flew with mine!
Got home, had a well deserve chiller with Ricardo and now exhausted watching TV.
:thanks: Gerry for a nice drive. :drive: :drive:

Sorry guys for dragging everyone down in the soup. One helluva morning!

    Lessons Learnt:
    – As a newbie if you are driving a big car – avoid following wranglers and FJs. you will not be able to do what they do!
    – the summer heat really expands the air in tires. i started the drive at 15. after getting stuck we decided to reduce it to 12. but upon fixing the gadget realized that i was back on 19! and on all the tires! so check every so often and reduce air pressure if need be.
    – everybody says carry at least 3 litres of water per person. nobody does! after our experience this morning its important to remember that these things happen when least expected. so carry enough water, isotonic drinks and perhaps some food in a ice bucket if possible.
    – carry a cap. my buddy ritesh was without one and even though he is fitter than me – he was feeling the fatigue (from the sun on his head) way more than i was.
    – do not under-estimate the power of good ol’ rope tug
    – have faith and perseverance in the team veterans who will figure out a way to get everyone out safe and sound!

As you can see this drive was equal to five drives in terms of lessons learnt:

Thanks again guys for the support and words of encouragement! Look fwd to the next one!

Vow!!! Its sounds as a drive of great learning experience…. :ymapplause: :ymapplause: :ymapplause:
Satyen, dont feel sorry and its always part of the game :-BD :-BD :-BD I am sure the knowledge you have gained is very valuable which will take you a long way ahead. Very precisely you have pointed out few basic rules of tackling the sand, which shows the serious traits in you as an offroader to learn and improve 🙂
Congrats to you all guys for safely handling the situation braving the burning sun :ymapplause: Good job too by the drive in charge – Gerry :ymapplause: Firoz, may the drive was a great experience to you as well.. good job :-BD
Ricaardoooo…happy to see you back in action with a bang :yesss:
Rob, now you are recovery specialist :ymapplause: :ymapplause: :ymapplause: I can drive as I wish, when you there in the convoy to pull me out with your extra equipped winch 🙂
    Expecting the pictures!!!
