    Last weekend I noticed that a lot of DO members didn’t have their radio programmed and didn’t know how to enter the right frequency either. Because of this some people couldn’t use their radio which is rather inconvenient when you drive in a convoy.

    To enable everyone to program their radio themselve I thought it would be nice to have one forum topic with howtos on all the different radio’s used in the club. So I hope this write up inspires other members to figure out how to program their device and then share their knowledge in this topic. All so that there will be no fuss the next time we use a different channel and we can spend more time actually :drive: instead of figuring out our radios ๐Ÿ™‚

    I only have on type of radio myself so I thougt i’d kickoff with mine. It’s a Quansheng TG-UV2.
    So here we go with the first how-to:

    HOWTO PROGRAM A QUANSHENG TG-UV2
    This radio is a dual band device. This means it can receive on two frequencies at the same time. You can use this to listen to two channels or to easily switch between two channels. The default mode is that you switch between to frequencies. Both frequencies are shown in the display, just press โ€œMAINโ€ to select which one you want to change. The active frequency is indicated by a downwards arrow. If you select the top or the bottom one does not matter when programming the radio.

    The quansheng can operate in either frequency or channel mode. In frequency mode you can punch in the frequency you want to use. Then you can store this frequency plus any other parameters you set. When you store it you assign a channel number. This process is often called โ€œprogrammingโ€. If you’re done you can switch to channel mode and then you can select another channel by just pressing the up and down keys. No fuss with entering frequencies which takes forever and eats into our precious time in the sands ๐Ÿ™‚

    So the first thing you need to do to program a channel is punching in the frequency. This can be tricky because this device has a โ€œchannel stepโ€ setting which, if set wrong, makes it impossible to enter the right frequency. To be able to punch in all the frequencies used by DO you have to set the channel step to 6.25. Here is how you do it:

    1. Press F+0+1 (so F followed by the 0 and the 1 key)
    2. Press the up/down buttons until the display shows โ€œ6 25โ€
    3. Press โ€œMR/VFOโ€
    4. Press โ€œFโ€ or โ€œPTTโ€ to exit the menu

    Now we have to switch the device into frequency mode so we can enter the frequencies manually. If the you got a new device it should be in frequency mode right away because there are no channels programmed jet. If you need to witch press the โ€œMNR/VFOโ€ button. Each press will change from channel to frequency mode or back.

    Now you have to select the right frequency band in which to operate which happens to be โ€œF3โ€. This is shown in the very first digits on the display (the small ones). To switch between the different bands press the โ€œBANDโ€ key until the display shows โ€œF3โ€.

    Now we should be ready to program our channels. Here we go:

    1. use the keypad to enter the frequency for channel 1 (462.5625). (Note that you probably don’t have to enter the last 5 as the radio select the nearest frequency based on channel step setting)
    2. Press F+MR/VFO
    3. Use up/down button to select the right channel number. In this case โ€œ1โ€.
    4. Press โ€œMR/VFOโ€
    5. The display shows โ€œSAVE?โ€
    6. Press โ€œMR/VFOโ€ again
    7. Repeat from step one until you entered all 14 channels.

    Done? Press โ€œMR/VFOโ€ and use the up/down keys to select the right channel.

    From now on if a marshal tells you we will not be using channel 4 you just press up or down, engage fourwheel drive, take you position in the convoy and off we go ๐Ÿ™‚

    To finish this first post I’ll attach the list of frequencies although you can find it in multiple places in this forum

    Channel —– Frequency (MHz)

    1 Wired earphone
    1 Synthetic strap

    Know the device switches:-
    โ€œFโ€ โ€“ Function button to configure the radio features.
    โ€œ#v/mโ€ โ€“ To changeover between frequency and channel modes.
    โ€œPTTโ€ – Push to talk button
    โ€œCLRโ€ – Cancel / return
    โ€œUp/downโ€ โ€“ scroll / change
    “Pwr/Vol” – Multipurpose switch – turn on/off device and volume control.

    The device works both on โ€œFrequency Mode” for the frequencies manually punched in and โ€œChannel Modeโ€ mode for the stored frequencies.

    Basic Configuration:-
    Switch on the device by turning the power/volume switch clock wise. The device will display the remaining battery power (range will be from 6v to 8.2v) while booting. If the battery power is less than 7.5v, consider it as due for recharge, to keep the device live till end of a drive.

    Letโ€™s start programming the deviceโ€ฆโ€ฆ ๐Ÿ™‚ Ensure the below device configuration since factory defaults may not be compatible to program the desired frequencies / bands.

    Press โ€œ#v/mโ€ and keep the device in Channel Mode.

    โ€œFโ€+1 = Squelch – Keep 3 as the squelch level (will ignore feeble signals for noise filtering)
    โ€œFโ€+2 = VOX โ€“ Always keep it off. Again press โ€œFโ€ + 2 to switch on VOX.
    VOX is voice operated switch. If kept on, will handsfree transmit (without pressing PTT) voice signals which is least desired in a convoy.
    โ€œFโ€+3 = DV โ€“ If โ€œDVโ€ symbol appears in the display screen, the device is programmed to transmit outbound voice signals in reverse frequency which will not be audible in other receivers. Press โ€œFโ€+3 again to switch off โ€œDVโ€ and the symbol will disappear while at off.
    โ€œFโ€+7=RT. Should be off.
    โ€œFโ€+7=TT. Should be off.

    โ€œFโ€+8 = Device Setup
    (Press up/down buttons to scroll the options and press โ€œFโ€ to access. Press up/down buttons to change the settings and again press โ€œFโ€ to save and return. Press โ€œCLRโ€ to cancel/return )
    1 = Beep = On
    2 = Light = Auto
    3 = TOT = 180
    4 = DIFFR = 10.00
    5 = Bank = Off
    6 = DCVOLT (displays the batter power)
    7 = VOX = 9
    8 = VOX D = 3
    9 = Save = On
    10 = Scan Mode = to
    11 = Scan Set = del
    12 = Keylock = Auto (press and hold * button to lock and unlock keypad)
    13 = OPm = dc
    14 = m56
    15 = Name = On
    16 = DW = On
    17 = Voice = ENG

    Press โ€œ#v/mโ€ and keep the device in Frequency Mode.

    โ€œFโ€+4 = Step = 12.5
    โ€œFโ€+5 = Shift = Nil (+/- display has to turn off by repeatedly pressing โ€œFโ€+5)
    If +/- is active, transmitting frequency will be 0.5 step upper or lower than to the channel frequency.

    You have successfully completed programming the device :-BD

    Now key in frequencies and store in respective channels for quick access.

    Lets key in and store our favorite Channel 4 = 462.6375

    Step 1:- Press โ€œ#v/mโ€ and select frequency mode
    Step 2:- Punch in 462.637
    Step 3:- Press โ€œFโ€ + *button โ€“ Channel number will start blinking next to the punched in frequency number. User up/down keys to change the channel number.
    Step 4:- Change channel number to 4 using up/down keys.
    Step 5:- Press โ€œFโ€ to save and return.

    Hurray!!! Channel 4 is saved is your device \:D/

    To access pre-stored channels, press โ€œ#v/mโ€ and select channel mode. Select the desired channel using up/down keys. It is highly recommended to store all 14 channels mentioned above in your radio for quick access, as and when required.

    Hi/Lo Select:-
    In channel mode if โ€œLโ€ is displayed, it means your device is transmitting signals at low voltage. Thus the signals will be quite weak and will have only very low coverage. However, this option will be useful to preserve battery power, if the situation demands.

    For common purpose of our drives high voltage is desired for the sake of clarity and better coverage in uneven terrain. To change from Low to High
    1) Press โ€œ#v/mโ€ and select channel mode.
    2) Press โ€œFโ€ + โ€œ#v/mโ€ (device is changed to high voltage once โ€œLโ€ disappears)

    Now let me explain you the possible entertainment with this device โ€“ FM RADIO

    To change the radio from transceiver mode to FM Receiver mode press โ€œVoice Checkโ€ button (small button right below โ€œPTTโ€) together with โ€œFโ€. Use the same key combination to switch off FM Receiver and change to transceiver mode.

    Guys โ€“ since it is only entertainment, I leave this option for you to explore !!! I cant keep my eyes open anymoreโ€ฆ. @-) The logic of channel and frequency is the same of transceiver, explained above. This device will serve the purpose of FM Radio, while camping.

    Emergency Alarm:- The small round button on top of the device, usually orange in color next to the power/volume button is for distress call. By pressing this button, your radio will transmit distress signals to all other devices in the same frequency. Though it is an emergency feature, it is misused a lot during drives knowingly or unknowingly. Please refrain from raising false alarms [-X [-X [-X

    If you are programming your radio for the first time, it is highly recommended to report at the meeting point well in advance and reconfirm the compatibility of your device with others. In case of any support, approach the marshals and keep a copy of these guidelines with you for quick reference.

    Happy radioing!!! :drive: :-BD
