    G’day All,

I will need to change the boots on my Armada soon and would like to know of any member’s experience or recomendations for a heavy vehicle. I should go with Bridgestone because this is the brand our company carries but they offer only one type in this size. However, I want to check my options. NOTE: I have standard wheels: 18″ x 8″, with factory recomended size: 265/70 x 18

    Hi David.

Seen you on Thursday drive. You managed very well, so I dont see why would you go for changing the brand/size of your tyres.
If you want more info on changing the tyres “format” just google “the tyre bible” there is a very informative page on most of the aspects.

But as my opinion as someone who had worked for a while in tyre industry – if the stock tyres perform well, you better keep them, otherwise you will surely mess up the ride. Changing the tyre ratio means you have to give up on comfort vs. speed (if you lower the profile ratio), or power vs. traction (if you increase the profile ratio). Profile ratio is the proportion of the side wall vs. the width of the tyre. In your case its 70% out of 265 cm. So if you want to make them wider (ie 285), then your profile should decrease (ie 65) proportionally to keep the rim size and overall diameter. That also only in case your rims can support this size, otherwise they will come off the rim. If the overall diameter is changed, your speedo might show wrong speed and you can get a camera flash ๐Ÿ™‚ Also ,the tyres become heavier, so the power will decrease (even on a V8, yes, because the power/traction will distribute to those extra cm proportionally).

I’m riding on cheap Korean Nexen 225/70 R16 – they perform good enough on and off the road. Chose them cause they’re soft and that gives good comfort on the road and good traction on the sand. But speeding while cornering is dangerous. But they are cheap ๐Ÿ™‚

Basically the brand doesnt really matter as long as the tyres are meant to do what you need them to. Expensive brands spend that extra charge for Marketing, while cheap brands concentrate on production. But this is purely IMHO. ๐Ÿ™‚ cannot prove that ๐Ÿ™‚

    Cheers! :-B

    Great reply Denis, thanks.

Most of the ration and profile info’ I am ok with. My questions really pertains to Brand and tread pattern, wheel [rims] are staying. I dont want super aggressive tread patterns, I could not handle the road noise.

You are likely right and I’ll go with something stock’ish and just give it more gas up the hills.

Thanks Denis for sharing your thoughts.
I am absolutely in agreement with Denis, best option is to keep the stock tyres for an everyday use vehicle.
