Washable air filter Fj cruiser 2014 vs stock paper

    Hi guys,

After cleaning my stock paper air filter in my Fj after every drive (and sometimes during a drive) I am contemplating replacing the air filter with a ๐Ÿ˜•
    1. new paper original one (the current one is only cleaned using air or tap against the tyre… and now has a slight tear in it)

    2. A trd version which is washable and can be inserted like the original into the current box- I believe it’s a preoiled (apparently made by aFe according to searches on the net)

    3. A k&d washable one like the trd is washable and fits into the current setup like the trd.

Considering that there isn’t a big change needed to the car it sounds interesting but was wondering if there is
    A. any benefit to the car in the desert performance wise
    B. ease of cleaning – how oftern would it need oiling (after every drive/rinse?)
    C. longevity – current paper one has only done 26000km and needs changing.

Any advice on any of these would be gratefully appreciated… :drive:
    ๐Ÿ˜‰
    :thanks:

K&N is a good choice, one can just dust & clean the filter after every drive to remove the trapped sand and perhaps clean it once every 5,000kms to 10,000 kms with the K&N recharge kit, depending upon the filter’s condition.

oil filters work best in dusty conditions… provided they are well maintained (cleaned and oiled properly) otherwise they wont work as intended and will let more abrasive sand and dust through to ur engine.

they tend to collect much more dust on their surface than dry filters due to the sticky oil dust-trapping effect. This will require more frequent cleaning and re-oiling to maintain proper filtering and high air flow rate maximising HP gains at high rpms !

if u dont mind the hassle of cleaning and waiting till they are completely dry the next day before u oil them, then these filters are the way to go and will last you for many years…

i have been happily using the k&n for the past 3yrs and i do clean and oil them after every 2 drives,,,,

just a note for FJ owners…
since your main air intake duct is oddly situated straight above the front right tyre, and as u have all noticed by now how much sand tends to collect in the air box after desert drives, you might sadly be looking at an air filter clean and re-oil job after every drive!!

    cheers

:thanks: for the feedback Ahmad and Joe- really appreciate it!
The FJ definitely does ALWAYS have a nice collection of sand in the filter box after every drive and (as per last drive, during the drive I also had to stop and clean it to regain power) and this will for sure mean cleaning after every drive… with then waiting for drying and oiling I perhaps will consider a snorkel to reposition the air intake rather than the oil based filter as next step.
Are there any suggestions on the full length vs shorter ones?

DO NOT GO FOR THE SHORT AIR INTAKE FILTER!!!
Personal experience…I lost an FJ engine due to the sand getting into the engine and destroying the innards!!!
    :ymsick:
I guess the snorkel type one will eliminate most of the sand intake but I personally do not like the look and hence I went back to the original air intake system with the K&N filter replacing the paper filter.

I was reading reviews on K&N air filters before I went ahead and replaced my paper filter with a washable /oiled one, I stumbled upon this review/ comparison where it is argued that the stock filters actually did better than the oiled ones. What do you think ?

    Thanks, Satish

I vote for stock filter. Alot goes into toyota’s R&D and there must be a reson why their engineers have approved dry filters. You may have noticed that the stock filter has two layers ie a thick foam sheet at the bottom and layers of filter paper on top.

Not sure if its true but ive read atlot that oiled filters can damage mass airflow sensors.

I usually blow sand out from my stock filter after every drive and i recently replaced (30000km) my filter with a new OEM filter

I am not a mechanical expert as many others in our club are but I can say this, I have seen several cars’ engines be destroyed due to using various after market air intake systems. So I was very hesitant to modify mine. However, I was educated on modifying my Prado with a Land Cruiser air nake system. The benefits are that you have a much bigger air intake designed for the much bigger LC engine. So my HP went up by about 20-25HP…enhance power definitely can be felt. Most importanly though, I still have stock, OEM Toyota parts, which have all of the R&D work from Toyota as Asim alludes to in his comment. So initially I would check it for cleaning and to clear out the sand but after several drives I would never see any sand…so quite honestly I don’t even bother checking it anymore.

Just a dumb comment (as you maybe have this already): mount a snorkel.
This will block by 90% the sand in the intake!
I compared few times my air filter (FJ with Snorkel) with others (FJ no snorkel) and I need to clean it 1/10 of thei times!

IMHO, but based on experience ๐Ÿ˜€
    1. Modifying air intake filter only makes it worse or doesnt change a thing as a best result. No power gains (sorry Matt :ymhug: ) as throttle body controls mixture of air/fuel, plus a bunch of sensors and the ECU of course. To prove that, try to remove completely the air intake, leaving just the throttle body exposed, now technically the whole world acts as a filter box. You will see a decrease in power, or no change at all (depending on your sensors and ECU setup). FJ doesnt even keep RPM’s without an airbox (tried it on Paul’s FJ).
    2. Snorkel in addition to stock air filter reduces the amount of sand going to the filter. That’s kinda obvious, especially if you have a mushroom type filter that Ahmad has, or at least if you turn the snorkel head backwards.
    3. Pre-oiled filters without snorkel are awful. During 1 hour drive in desert they will become fully covered by sand, restricting the airflow. Sand just sticks to the oil. My own and a bunch of other ppl experience. It’s You working for the filter, not the other way around :ymdevil:
    4. Pre-oiled filters with snorkel are ok, yaanee average. However, no real benefit except show-off. As a conclusion to the above.
Just put the K&N sticker and be cool, and don’t change the intake and be smart :-B B-) :ymhug: ๐Ÿ˜€
    Peace O:-)

oh, I forgot to mention, I have a snorkel too…so this also helps keep much of the sand out

Sorry, again I forgot to mention, I had bigger throttle body installed too ๐Ÿ˜€ so the combination of this, my LC air intake, and my snorkel keep me sand free and with enhance power….and less fuel efficiency :-w

Hehe, Matt, in this case you’re safe and indeed more powerful ๐Ÿ˜€
