Dubai: Motorists in Dubai will soon be able to renew their driving licences and vehicle registration online, said a senior official.

“We are developing an online portal to help motorists renew their driving licences and vehicle registration without making trips to our offices,” said Ahmad Bahrouzian, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Licensing Agency at the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority.

Bahrouzian who played an important role in e-Government projects of the Dubai government before joining the RTA, told Gulf News that the aim of the online service would be to reduce number of trips the customers have to make to offices.

“Online initiative will help customers complete many other services on the internet but we will be focusing more on the renewal of licences and car registration,” he added.

Bahrouzian said that customers would be able to pay the fees online. He said details about the system would be announced very soon.

He said that it was essential to introduce such online services to also help reduce unnecessary trips and avoid traffic congestion.

The online service will be available to motorists who obtained driving licences in Dubai and have their vehicles registered here. There are more than one million vehicles registered in Dubai with around 173,000 new vehicles registered in 2008.

“We have witnessed some 17 per cent growth in the number of vehicles during the last few years. Around 1.2 million people in Dubai also hold driving licences while an average of 12,000 licences per month were issued last year. All these people have to go to the RTA offices to get service and have to wait in queues.”
