Can any one tell me about the Cherokee 4.0 with inline engine. I am toying with the idea of picking up this car for regular off the road driving. Keen to know your thoughts.

Assuming you talk about the older one, I drive the old Granny with 4.0, which has mostly same aggregates and below mix from own experience + web info from users:
    – engine is unbreakable
    – transmission is unbreakable
    – differentials are weak points and if broken then the cheapest way is to change full axle from junk yard ~1500-2000 a piece.
    – if it has U joint shafts, then they are almost unbreakable
    – transfer case is best if you have the one with 2WD + 4Hi + 4Lo. I think its called SelecTrac. Fully mechanical and almost unbreakable.
    – body is very strong if no rust and it can survive really serious accidents and abuse.
    – overheating is a big issue. But quite easy to solve with the right approach.

    Cheers

EDIT: Google for “It’s a jeep thing” – this phrase means a lot more than it seems to those who never owned one :ymdevil:

I absolutely agree with Denis…the older 90’s Jeep Wrangler, Cherokee and Grand/ Laredo all with the inline 4.0 litre 6 cylinder engine was almost bulletproof mechanically, though they had some electrical issues as well as that universal bane of most American automobiles…the heating issues…Plus if one can get this vehicle with a manual transmission…it will be an almost unbeatable combination!!!
Realistically speaking though, Altaf…you may never like any other offroad vehicle after having been spoilt by the legendary FJ Cruiser’s reliability, capability and comfort…

In addition to the above, you cannot switch on AC in old jeeps on drives at any moment due to heating issues. Even though there are many ways to resolve heating issues but still the AC problem remains unsolved.

    Hi Guys

I have come across reports that the FJ will be discontinued. Has anyone else heard about it? The FJ is a brilliant rig for both on-road and off-road purposes so I am surprised that Toyota is planning to discontinue with it.

I also wonder what they will replace it with if the reports are indeed true.

That is right Sajid The FJ will be discontinued after the model year 2014. The reason apparently being some market research that suggests that there is too much overlap between the models Fortuner/ Prado/ FJC/ Landcruiser / Hilux and the LC pickup all sharing the same engine and drive trains and with FJ catering to a very specialised market with not enough numbers… by Toyota standards, obviously, it has to go and besides they want to use this production capacity for other vehicles.
There are currently no plans to offer any specific replacement model for the FJ Cruiser.

Incidently…the author of the article Imthishan Giado, user name iggy, is a member of Dubai offroaders, though not as active ever since he sold off his 100 series Land Cruiser for a Toyota 86…sports coupe.
