Drive briefing can be viewed on this page and communications on the day will be carried out by radio, so please ensure your radio carries the correct channel announced on your convoy’s WhatsApp group so you can line up correctly once at the meeting point, deflate your tires are deflated and mount your flag.

Hi all really looking forward to joining on Friday. As a first timer, can i ask a few basic questions

    1. What do you recommend i watch / read to get a few basic driving techniques for sand? Any good online links?
    2. Ive got and tested the kit needed, radio channels are set up, what should i set the default channel to for the briefing?
    3. How long is the drive likely to last i.e do i need to be concerned about driving in the dark and prepare torches etc.
    4. Anything else you recommend i bring?

    Thanks in advance

    Kan

    Hi Kan,

Glad to see you are prepared for Friday. To answer some of your questions:
    1. There are plenty of videos online but honestly, the best preparation is come with an open and calm mind. First drives are always at a relaxed pace and the best way to learn is by doing, which the flying marshals will help you and talk you through the steps via radio if you get into a tricky bit. Never be shy to ask!
    2. Each convoy will have a WhatsApp group where the radio channel will be communicated. You should be added to the WhatsApp group for your particular convoy tonight / tomorrow morning.
    3. We usually try to finish our drives by around 1800 or 1830 so we should be out of the sand before sunset. Always a good idea to bring a torch just in case.
    4. Closed shoes. The sand is hot and just walking up a soft dune for 5 meters can burn your feet if you’re in flip flops. A hat and sunscreen are also a good thing to have. I always recommend taking re-fillable flasks for water in order to minimize our impact on the environment with plastic waste (assuming you have a water dispenser at home). The vacuum flasks are great as they keep your water cold for up to a day.

Hope you will enjoy the drive and see you tomorrow!

    Hi All

Not sure if the WhatsApp groups have been created yet, but I had to change/update my phone number in my profile. If the convoys have been assigned and WhatsApp group created, would it be possible to add me to the same on my new number?

Thanks and see you this afternoon!
