    Hi All,

Recently joined DO group, i would like to start enjoying the beauty of UAE nature.
I don’t know from where to start from buying a car, with off-road part and driving experience being a beginner on this.

I do not want to spend a lot at the beginning and get maximum experience before going a long-term investment with a high end car.

I’m thinking to buy a jeep wrangler year 2000 to 2006. What do you think and if any other suggestion will take it :).

Thanks in advance for your support and guidance.

    Hi Saif,

    Welcome to DO.

A TJ (2000 – 2006 Wrangler) is a great start in theory for a novice off-roader. However, in this region because of the heat I wouldn’t personally recommend that. I have had some experience with the 4.0 I6 engine and tried everything in the book to keep it cool. But, it inevitably will heat and you will not have AC for the afternoon drives that are slow paced (so you can’t keep yourself cool with windows open) and when most beginners come.

If you do opt for an old Jeep, I would recommend a Cherokee XJ, preferably a manual. I find that vehicle to be more iconic. It will also come with all the problems I described above. In addition, regardless of how good the condition of an old vehicle is, when you start off-roading with it, it will demand money for mechanical fixes. In my experience if you spend around AED 10 – 15K on an old Jeep, it will demand another AED 10K in the coming six months before the cooler months start and you are actually able to enjoy it. That is without spending on any modifications.

I would choose a 100 series Land Cruiser or even a Lexus LX 470 as your first vehicle. Extremely capable even if you end up with the 4.5 I6 engine. A 1998 – 2002 GXR would cost you around AED 25 – 30K. Just don’t buy one with a lift kit from Sharjah and sand tyres. That car has already seen all its good days.

Good luck and hope to see you on sand soon.

    Hello Ashok

I am new to the group and a complete beginner to off-roading. Since you mentioned you used to use a Pajero for offroading, I have a question.

Is a stock 3.8 Pajero a decent enough vehicle to go off-roading here? Or do you think I will need to make any modifications before it becomes viable on the sand?

Hi Selman, the 3.8 Pajero is a capable off-roader. Just need skid plates. Join our drives to see it for yourself.

Welcome to Dubai Offroaders. Dragon Mart is a good option.

I have an LX470 and my friend has an LC100. I just want to add that although these might not be the mightiest offroaders, they are extremely durable and friendly on your pocket than most other 4×4 vehicles out there.

Good morning all. My name is Kurt and I recently joined DO. I have really want to join the beginners drive on the 3rd and have purchased most of the required recovery gear already. Being new to the sport in Dubai, I just need some guidance as to where I can purchase a flag and flag mount. I also need to know what the DO radio frequency is so that I can purchase the correct radio.

Your guidance will be greatly appreciated. Hoping to be ready in time and meet you al in the sand on Friday.

    Hi everyone!

My name is Karan Methwani and I recently joined DO! I had a few questions regarding the beginner off road drives.
    1) Will a Patrol Super Safari be okay for the beginner drives?
    2) Where shall I get all the equipments from? Looking for the most reasonable ones?
    3) Is it free to participate in the drives or are there any charges?

    Thank you so much!
Your guidance will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Karan,

Yes, the Super Safari is a capable car for off-roading. You can get a radio and a flag in dragon mart and first two drives with us are free.
