When we find the original auto head lamp can’t be more brightness as our request, then we need to install off road light to enlarge your vision to be safe driving.

There are different types of off road lights are available in the market. You can choose one according to your requirement and thickness of your pocket.

HALOGEN off-road lights have been around the longest, produce enough light for most applications, and are the most affordable type of off-road light. If you’re on a budget, or just need some additional lighting without a lot of bells and whistles, then a halogen off-road light is the right choice for you.

HID off-road lights, also known as Xenon lights, produce up to 3 times brighter and more consistent light than a halogen bulb. They are also more durable, vibration resistant, and last up to 10 times longer. HID lights have the best long distance illumination of any auxiliary light and that is why you see a lot of them on the tops of desert racing vehicles.

LED off-road lights are very efficient, lightweight, extremely bright, have the longest life of any light, and are easy to mount thanks to their compact size. Rock crawlers, desert racers, and rally car drivers have been changing over to LED lights in masses because their close and mid-range illumination is unsurpassed.

When we choose HID off road light, we will meet some doubt, what’s best 9″ hid off road light?

As from my years of experience, I have some suggestion for reference.

First: Clear installation using. Check light usage, you want it for fog or for spot, then choose the beam pattern. Usually, for enlarging your vision, you’d better Choose Flood Beam (Spread Beam), if you want to more far your eyes, then you can choose Spot Beam (Pencil Beam). If you want see far, also want to see widely, then you can choose two types beams for multiple. IMO combination of two spot beam in the middle and two flood beam on the sides will give you the optimum result.

Second: Brightness. You need to check the light Lumens, use which brand bulbs very important, Osram, Philips brand will be better, if the light is xenon, the ballast also very important, so before the order, you need to learn the light lumens detail tech.

Third: Avoid damaging other’s eyes. After you install on the bumper bar or roof rack, you need to check the lights beam can’t too divergent, that’s will hurt other’s eyes, so you need to adjust the light angle to avoid the damaging other’s eyes. After according to adjust angle, also can’t avoid the hurt eyes, then please choice other suitable light to install. Don’t forget to put the light covers when you are driving on the road. Otherwise you may invite a traffic cop to issue a ticket.

Forth: Beautiful your cars. The shape and color of light need to Very collocation with your cars.

Fifth: Control your budget. Some lights are very expensive, so please choose the lights don’t over your budget.

Above suggestion just my personal point, I am very glad to hear friends other suggestion.

What abaut the mounting position? I know fog light work best when they are mounted low on the car. That way you light the road and roadside directly in front of you without having the light directly reflected in your eyes. So you are not blinded by your own lights. This is why factory installed fog light are usually in the bumper beneath the headlights. But because of the low position they don’t reach very far. That doesn’t matte because you can’t see through fog anyway.

I can imagine that in the desert you want to light up an area as large as possible. So i guess flood light mounted on the roof are preferred? Or will that blind the car in front of you? Any idea’s on this?

Rob, go for roof mount HID Lights. No need to go for a costly brand. You can find few low cost HID lamps at the below location. Infact I had gone for a pair which costed me around AED.360/- (yet to test it 😉 ) Thanks to Satwinder and Kashmirji for sharing this info with me.

A ready made bracket for Patrol is quite difficult, which you need to fabricate at any car accessory shops and may cost around AED.250/- including fitting & detachable wiring.

Fix the bracket and light wiring as a detachable option. Roof mount lights does not look good for Patrol 🙂

    Detached bracket & lights:-
