Hi all! Wanted to take my wife for surprise anniversary bbq/dinner to the desert. Since i am total newbie in desert driving, and will be driving alone, wanted smth not too difficult to reach, but still be slightly away from the roads and city lights. Not looking for desert safari driving, just smth simple and slightly distant. Can anyone advise on the spots that i could reach and not get stuck. All i could find was lahbab and fossil rock. Truck is TLC 200 5.7. Thanks.
Mmmm…don’t want to be a spoil sport, but if you’re a complete newbie (haven’t driven in sand), better not to go inside alone. The good cause can turn into a bitter experience.
If you know basics of driving and still want to sit on sand, then some areas which are semi secluded and good for we-time.October 20, 2020 at 11:17 am #44340I have driven on light sand but havent taken any courses nor went on any group rides. Agree thats it probably not the best idea, but in case i want to take the risk, can you suggest some of these semi remote spots. Thnks
It’s certainly not a good idea to go into the desert or sand alone (and getting stuck may just ruin your anniversary unless you bring a tent 😉)
I would recommend parking on a quite road near one of the spots @trq mentioned, and then waking/climbing over a dune or two with your BBQ to be further from the road.
An alternative is to find a gravel gatch track (typically alongside pylons). These will take you further from traffic and are much safer. You can then sit with your backs to the pylon and enjoy endless dunes 😎
Whatever you decide to do, make sure you tell someone exactly where you are going and the time you will check in with them to let them know you’re safe. If they don’t hear from you within an hour of the check in time, they can call for help. (And don’t miss the check in time)
And, enjoy 😁
