Family Overnighter – Oman
Assessing interest for a family overnighter in Oman. A mix of wadi drive and camping.
Even non families are welcome, but please note that due to children and families in the convoy, it may be a slow paced trip.
Tentative details are as under:

early start around 7 from Dubai and cross over to Oman at the Hatta border
road drive till Rustaq
Wadi drive thru wadi Bani Awf
beautiful mountain village oasis of Bilat Sayt
Steep mountain drive thru Wadi Haat and Al Hamra and Tanuf
Drive up to Jebel Akdhar summit
Camp at a height of about 2000 meters from mean sea levelSaturday: One or more following optional activities as you feel like:

Visit to Nizwa fort, the biggest and well restored fort in Oman and Nizwa SouqSunday:
Depart from Jebel Akdhar after breakfast
Wadi drive thru wadi Ghul
Visit Beehive tombs of Bat
Join the highway 21 at Dank
Enter UAE from AlainStaying options at Jebel Akdhar:
1. camp at an appropriate site in the mountains, or
2. stay at the furnished apartments being coordinated by Anil Berry
3. stay at the Jebel Akdhar hotel. those interested advised to book well in advance as this is a small 26 rooms hotel and is usually blocked by group booking. the hotel is nice but when i stayed there last in 2006, it didn’t have any extras like pool etc.It is not necessary for everyone to spend two nights at Jebel Akdhar. You may if you want, do one of the activities listed above on Saturday and return to Dubai on the same day. Dubai is about 400-450 kms depending upon which route (via Ibri-Alain or via Seeb-Sohar.
Please indicate here if you wish to join and also indicate whether you are game for a 3 day trip or only for 2 days. We will finalise the programme based on number of participants and their preferences.

I enquired at the Jebel Shams Motel and he quoted the following rates:
For Family of 2 adults and 2 children:
New chalets : RO 60/-
Old chalets : RO 55/-Per person:
Arabic tent (with bedding and blankets): RO 20 per person
New Chalet: RO 30/- per person
Old Chalet: RO 25/- per personNotes:
1. All the rates are on per night basis and include buffet BF and Dinner
2. if we don’t want to have food, the reduction would be RO5/- for dinner and RO 3/- for BF
3. all chalets have attached bath, the ones staying in tents have to depend on common toilet blocks
4. if someone wishes to pitch own tent: RO 5 per person excluding any food, you may of course pay separately for BF, Dinner as required. Intentionally, I have not enquired whether he will charge for children also, but we can also take a chance. Asking a specific question may get a response “Yes”, which I did not want to hard code.
5. these rates are substantially higher than what I paid before but I guess it’s a factor of weekend and season. The global downturn doesn’t appear to have an impact on them. However, once we know what we want, we can always negotiate a better price. My guess is we can get a minimum of RO 2/- off on per person charges quoted by themLet’s decide what we want to do. These guys have very limited capacity as far as chalets are concerned, so we need to act fast and book early. Tents can be booked any time, they have an infinite capacity.
Just in case, we or some of us want to skip the motel, the ones skipping the motel can camp just outside the motel and go in whenever they need to access the restaurant. Bonfire and BBQ can arranged together at the campsite.
Please advise what’s your opinion
ps. this is not relevant now as we have changed the destination to Jebel Akdhar. however, i am not deleting this as this info may be useful for the members in future
I’ll take the new chalet… RO 60… however.. I don’t want dinner as I would much rather enjoy Anil Berry’s BBQ delicacies….
Is it possible?
How much and when do I pay?
In case the majority decides to camp outside, then I don’t mind that too….
In my opinion, why don’t we book one chalet for the kids and the rest of us camp outside… have our BBQ and campfire there… and use the chalet facilities whenever we need to… Is that a workable option… Need your input AJS… as you’ve been there and have first hand experience of the place… Are the chalets near the camping site?

BTW, I have tentatively blocked 4 “new” chalets for two days within which we have to confirm or release. for couples without accompanying kids, even the “old” chalets are good.
quote navedhasan:I’ll go with your suggestion and book a “new” chalet for me and mine…notedHow and when do I pay? no worries, your word is good enough 🙂
BTW, what dates are we talking here about? as of now, April 3-5, I will be able to confirm by next weekend. expecting some guests from India in april, i would know their programme by next week
quote navedhasan:Wish we could have crossed the Wahiba Sands too… That would have made this trip even more memorable!wahibas will make the trip longer. moreover the whole family may not withstand it. anyway there’s always a next time…….
let this be a leisure trip :ymparty: hardcore driving :drive: next time
