The photos are incredible !!! Those dunes look wicked -sharp crests with ‘quicksand’ bowls – a recipe for an awesome drive.

Drive report
I rolled over and stared at the numbers OMG 05.45am …what where am I…. what day is it? Did I fall asleep on top of Pink Rock on thursday night?
Ah yes, Saturday morning’s Ghost busters drive …..yay 😀 leaping out of bed I silently gathered my kit, passing by the kitchen for water and nuts. A quick fill at Labhab and I’m at Nazwa, evidently not the first.. I silently wondered if these guys had spent the night here after the sandstorm :))
Tyres deflated, flags up, Marshall Amjed announced the convoy’s, we are off, quick stop on entry for each Marshall, Kumar, Ganesh, Ashok, Robinson & Amjed to brief their troops.
This reports troops led by Marshall’s Kumar on the sharp end, Rein 2nd lead, Wasi, Carl and self as Sweep, steadily climbed though haphazard dunes towards the pyramids. Powering up we hit a series of hard and soft sand crests, the drive level gradually increasing. Our first stop at the crest of a the highest Pyramid lasted only long enough for a photo opp, there was a queue for this one as Ganesh and Robinson were hard on our heels.
Kumar led off the top and we made a series of swooping descents before turning North towards freshly cleansed, untracked sand. Hours and Hours later having climbed, side-sloped, crossed-over many dunes and their bowls, crests and pockets we emerged at the very top of Iftar from the rear.
I have to say that those hours were not totally without incident or challenge, however as they have been adequately reported in the various FB photo posts I shan’t linger. Suffice to say all retry’s /recoveries were swiftly and successfully executed with minimal convoy delay.
On from Iftar our track descended and edged out onto the badlands of the Ghost town approach. Kumar, ever vigilant for the sinking sands in this area, lead the convoy through intricate small dunes, hiding very soft faces, and we carved a track up, down, round and over those small tricky dunes, watchfully looking for Camels and Ghosts in the valleys. Within sight of the Minaret of Ghost Town’s mosque the radio crackled.. our Marshall announced that we had 200metres to go, a convoy member responded with the comment “Ghosts busted” …seconds later the same convoy member was grabbed and held very firmly in very soft sand :ymdevil: Moral never mock the Ghosts B-)
Ghost town first timers were provided with a hoard of photo memories and for some very small souvenirs of our visit plus DO :drive: group photo op. 😀
A very special note has to be made of the outstanding commitment made by Marshall Robinson to the prevalent environmental issue of garbage. Unaided he collected a very large sack of jettisoned packaging. An example of personal commitment that I think we should all recognise and applaud :ymapplause: :ymapplause:

At Tawi Nazwah shops, early! All here? Yep! Ok, so after a quick head count we were divvied up into 3 groups, then, it was time for deflation and raising flags. There was great feeling in the air, but maybe this was only me because of my nervous anticipation of what was to come for me and my trusty ‘ship’ venturing onto new grounds.
Lead by Ganesh, 2nd me, 3rd Jason, 4th Gabriel and Sweep Robinson. I am not sure if being second to Lead is a good thing or not but as long as I am in there somewhere, I am happy.
The trip through to the Iftar Bowl was brilliant. A flowing drive over, up, down and around dunes that were all with fresh, sharply honed edges following the recent storms and it added to the stunning rugged beauty of the desert. Closer to the destination the ascents became steeper and longer as our fearless Leader guided us to the peak of a very high dune that offered great challenges as well as great rewards from the views had from the top. Robinson’s experience shone through, with thanks, on a few occasions to provide information and timely advice to help the “next generation” safely to our goals.
After the Peak, it was an undulating drive to the Iftar Bowl. Not enough photos can give perspective of the grandeur of this site. I felt like a pioneer breaking new ground and the urge to plant my Armada on top of the Bowl was over-whelming. However, not before I received some stern words of wisdom from my Ground Controllers prior to my launch. What I remember most about reaching the top was the look on Musbah’s face as I rounded his car to park next to him. I can’t say who had the bigger smile, him or me but I know that I still have that smile thinking about it even now. However, admittedly it is a lot steeper than it looks from the base but I am in high spirits to have made my first trip safely and memorable for my passenger, on-lookers and me.
Coming down from the highs to the low, tight, twisty and soft sand traps that take us towards the infamous Ghost Town was very exciting. We joined up with Ahsok’s band of merry men to go through to Ghost Town together. The small dunes seemed to go on and on relentlessly. Then, with my first sighting of GT just a few more short dunes away, nothing was going to stop us getting there clear and clean. It is worth all the effort and early rise out of bed. It is a great sight and perfect site to conclude the day’s fun.
What we did on this day was for me absolute vindication that I have chosen the right club/crew to indulge my passion for off-road as well as for adventure. My thanks go out to all Marshalls, Sweeps and co-drivers for a perfect day out.
