Registration for the 2013 Gulf News Overnighter Fun Drive is expected to be announced and open from Tuesday, 25th December 2012.
The registration will be open for a week’s period for limited number of cars. Interested participants can sign up between 9am and 2pm at the Gulf News offices on Shaikh Zayed Road. Participants from Abu Dhabi and Alain can register at the Gulf News Office in respective emirates.
The Fun Drive is an event for four-wheel drive vehicles only. Entry for the Fun Drive is open to all, but preference will be given to Gulf News subscribers.
Watch for the announcement (http://www.gulfnews.com) for more details and try to register on the first day itself, for more chances to secure a ticket to participate in the event. Since the event is for limited number of cars, usually the available slot for public get filled up during the first day itself.
Few DO Marshals will be marshaling this huge event as GNFD Marshals :ymapplause: :ymapplause: :ymapplause:
Interested DO members for GNFD 2013 shall list out their names here after registering for the event once the announcement is released by Gulf News. DO members registered for the event can drive together as a convoy during the event and we may have few of our marshals for support.
This will be my 6th GNFD and I look forward to secure a ticket to participate ๐
Shabeer when you register for the drive they shall ask you for the car / gps details which I presume would help them make certain acceptance / rejection decisions.
This year they shall accept greater entries as they are gunning for the Guinness records of over 1000 4x4s in the drive.
@Kumar – An agent from the Gulf News call center called me back right now to re-clarify that the registration date might be 26th and not 25th. Just fyi.
quote forgoz:Why this Fun Drive is special for everyone, Why there is a rush for paying AED 350 to GN, Does it have something special…..Just a newbie question…Share your experience..pls..??Good question David ๐ Well i can share here few information pertaining to the well known offroad annual event of the region – Gulf News Fun Drive (GNFD).
Ever-popular, the event has been running since 1986 โ and the year 2011 was its silver anniversary year with around 750 cars taking part. GNFD has been running for 25 years, some years have seen two fun drives and 2011 was the 30th drive. As a testament to its popularity, every year there will be more than 200 vehicles on the waiting list. There is certain speculations that this year it is going to be the most number of cars participating in an offroad event for Guinness World Records.
In 1986, a total of 75 4×4 drives took part in the Gulf News Fun Drive, which was designed to give people an opportunity to experience the desert. The route is very carefully chosen and tested mainly over tricky sand and gravel sections and will be a test of concentration, endurance, patience and off-road driving skills, from start to finish. There will be plenty of high dunes and tricky stretches that will surely test the driving skills of veterans and give novices an ideal opportunity to hone off-road driving skills.
Approximately 50 highly-experienced marshals will be present along the drive route to assist and guide participants. DO is also a proud partner with Gulf News in hosting this grand event. A team of around 200 Gulf News personnel will also be involved with the event, manning check-points and taking care of all organisational details. There will be professional recovery agency / service provider and basic mechanical support by the GNFD main sponsors, Al Futtaim Motors – Toyota.
GNFD is an overnighter โ where participants can enjoy an overnight stay under the open skies of the desert. The Overnighter events have been running since 1989, adding an additional element to the off-road adventures. Friday night, weary campers will be treated to bellydancing, a DJ, fire show and magician, face painters for younger revelers, camel rides and a traditional whirling dervish performance and an awesome dinner treat. Saturday, campers will wake to the aroma of breakfast and make their way home.
I have been participating in Gulf News Fun Drive since 2007 and I can very authentically state that it is one of the best professionally organized offroad event for such huge public. Its a different fun to drive along with 750 cars, help them and spend a good evening with a grand feast. For sure you will witness variety of incidents all the way long, which is a worth experience.
