Looking to buy a decent off roading vehicle in the next few weeks and hope to make friends and learn a lot on this forum.
Thanks
Your choice of your current rides worries me 😉
My suggestion would be to restrict your choice for an offroad vehicle to one of the Japanese brands & you will be okay & stressfree… 🙂Name: Malkiat Singh

Welcome to the group Malkiat, Lokesh & Pulkit.
It was nice meeting you all, yesterday.
🙂Hello, my name is Alastair Woolley and I arrived in Dubai in August this year with my wife and three daughters.
At the moment we are renting a very small and very cheap run around, so no chance of off-roading at the moment, but I was hoping to get some advice on what sort of 4×4 to get. It needs to be good enough for excursions into the desert, but also pretty comfortable for the day to day school runs and trips to the mall. My budget is going to be in the region of 60-70k AED and I have heard good things about the Toyota Fortuner and Prado (the former probably being closer to my budget), but any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I previously (15 years ago) lived in Riyadh and had many trips to the “desert” in my old Land Rover Light Weight. I put desert in quotes because the terrain around Riyadh is not at all sandy, more scrub like, so the driving is much less challenging, though still great fun.
I am an IT Network Engineer by trade, although I am still looking for work since my arrival – luckily my wife works and is supporting us at present.
Hopefully we will have our 4×4 in the next few weeks and be able to come along on one of the newby adventures.
All the best
Alastair

You will find lots of information about our passion on this forum, join one of our learners drives and I’m sure you will enjoy the camaraderie, the challenge and the scenery.
Please remember there are no stupid questions and get :drive: “JUST FOR FUN”
Before you show up you will need to register for the drive, look under learner drives, next drive is on the 18th Oct. it’s also a good idea to complete your profile if you haven’t already done so.
To facilitate your learning curve and for your safety, we suggest you purchase a two radio, ‘walkie talkie’ prior to joining a drive. We have our own radio channels and if you look under the Technical Articles forum you will find full information on what to do and where to go. Kenwood and Motorola are the better brands.
Any other info you need just launch a cry for help and someone, or several people, will assist you eventually, it’s all benevolent so please be patient. There might be a little gap in replies over EID as we have a mini expedition to Oman
However welcome and enjoy :ymhug:

If you need any information or guidance just post on the main page of the forum or in chat, someone will reply to you, there is a lot of info archived within the pages of these forums. You can also PM a member directly.
I encourage you to explore the Technical Articles forum and the News and Announcements also. Keep an idea on the drives forums too.
As you are all newbies to the club I also encourage you to register for one of our LEARNER :drive: by clicking on the big red register button found on every drive announcement page.
Prior to coming on your first :drive: I further encourage you to read the sections on this site which cover communications and ‘walkie talkies’. You should purchase this essential bit of kit BEFORE your first drive. It isn’t compulsory but without a radio you are OUT IN THE COLD, you receive no warnings, can not call for HELP, nor receive encouragement or directions should you need it to recover from your first ‘stuck’ which will happen, is totally normal and you should not worry about it.
Every drive is Led and Swept by experienced off-roaders carrying enough kit to get you out of trouble, this includes ‘First aid’ ‘tools’ ‘ropes’ ‘jacks’ and ‘compressors’. However don’t let that list of kit worry it is all
