Today I tested the Prado (2004, 4L, LWB, manual) in an Intermediate drive with some challenges and I wanted to share my thought forwhomever is considering this car.
Score:
1 stuck (flat surface)
1 popout
Powerful engine with very good torque
Very comfortable ride
I am really amazed by its performance and I have not regretted my choice. It’s not a Wrangler, so the driver need to be prudent if he want to keep his bumper, the approach angle is a little bad and could be corrected by a lift kit, or by slowing down… Vey very slow… When descending a steep dune…
Unfortunately slowing down too mutch can make you in a very bad situation if you get stuck
The engine was amazing… Was consistantly talking to me ๐ I can take more I can take more… ๐
The vehicle is well balanced, with a slower reaction to the steering than the wrangler (obviously)
As for any offroad car, the tyres are as important as the power of your car, and sometimes more important…
So it is now a mission for me tofind the perfect combination, as the car was strugling on soft sand… And it made me think a lot… I don’t like that ๐
That’s my two fils… The car is fantastic…..

Khalil, you are absolutely correct. Try to get Michelin LTX and see the difference. Very difficult to find one and costly also. But it will give you the result.
May 18, 2012 at 12:23 pm #17052This was obvously a quite clear and logical choice after the Wrangler…and you made the transition very smoothly as it is normally not quite so easy to move from one vehicle to another…especially between two vehicles that are so drastically different…Thanseer is right…with correct tyres…you can climb Mountains!!!

Even one second will count. Don’t forget about the tires. After two three drives once Khalil understood his toy, then we can see he will be flying around.
Thanseer, it s not about flying around the car performed very well yesterday. For our average drives nothing need to be done really. Except for the tires which are due to be changed already.
Satwinder, the manual gear is sure not as solid as in the wrangler. But beside iftar bowl, where I pushed it more tgan I should, there was absolutely no jssue with it. I have not felt the need to change gears often any way… So it is really alright. I would recommend it any time. An FJ manual will be a killer. Would take that any time.
As for the tire and first mode (sorry ex-wrangler guy) my choice is locked ๐
2in lift kit + Cooper ATR 275/70/17 tires they will be ordered tomorrow. Can’t wait. They will look ugly on stock rims I know, but that what the pocket ca afford for now ๐Cheers
May 19, 2012 at 9:42 am #17060I know What a Prado 4.0L can do. I did that all things. I will be posting some videos and pictures as soon as I get it from my friend’s camera.

I was leaning towards a manual FJ. Recently I got to try one and it felt so nice. but yesterday I realized; A heavy car and manual gear is a no-go in the sands. I can rev the wrangler, drop the clutch and wheels will spin. do that in a heavy car like the FJ I was planning.. time to put in a new clutch.
Looking forward to the next drive :p
:-w :-w :-w Please do not talk bad about a Manual FJ… :-w :-w :-w
I just bought one in the US and am in the process of bringing it in here…so hopefully we should be testing it out 4-6 weeks from now…
This is the same Awesome V6 4.0L engine as the Prado/ Fortuner and even the Landcruiser…mated to a specially designed 6 Speed Manual Transmission with Rear and Center Locking Differential !!!
I guess it should be a good compromise between my last 2 Off Road Cars…a Wrangler and a Landcruiser…
So…Who wants to go for an extreme Liwa Drive in Late June/ July? :ymdevil: :ymdevil: :ymdevil:quote Ahmed Pervez:quote j3r3miah:Take your time on the tires.. there are so many to choose from and so many opinions. :pHonestly, after watching you on iftar bowl, I had an eye opener.
