Trip Report
We finally made it. Over 310 kms :drive: offroad (actual offroad from the deflation point to the reinflation point) over three days; over 400 kms on the tarmac; two camping nights. And all this in the finer parts of the Empty Quarter. Moreover the icing on the cake was a successful visit to the Degree Confluence Point N23 E55, not far away from the international border.
As planned, we had started from Dubai in the morning of 2nd December. With Naved getting caught in the family tangles and dropping at the 10 hour, we were left with 5 cars โ Yours truly in Nissan Patrol; Ahmed Parvez in LC; Suri in FJ; Saif in FJ and Ibrahim with his son Abdalla in Nissan Patrol. In addition to these 5 participating cars, we had some guests giving us moral and recovery support โ Ali Adnaan, Sridhar and his son Arun.
Though we had a delayed (nothing unusual ๐ for us ๏, isnโt it!!) start, we could cover a lot of ground. We entered from E-22, drove thru the tarmac and little gatch track, deflated and jumped into the sand. Due to the late start, we could not reach the Conflence point on day 1, and decided to camp in the middle of tall dunes just 6 kms short of the target.. However before dropping in the anchor, we had covered numerous tall dunes and a couple of massive ridges.
Next morning, we headed towards the confluence point and reached about 300 meters close to the target. Since the terrain was quite touch for driving, we decided to trek the remaining distance. Though it was 300 meters only, but we had to cross two tall ridges and it was quite tiring. Yours truly, Ahmed, Suri, Sreedhar, Fateh, Arun and Abdalla trekked the full distance, the others decided to wait midway and stood standby for any support that we may have required.
Once the confluence was conquered, we resumed our drive towards Humeem, crossing many a tall ridges in the process. Thereafter, some distance on a track to cover some faster distance. However, a moment of anxiety came when some officials of the nearby Environment Rangerโs office chased us and wanted to know our intentions. However, the queries were amicably answered and we resumed with out drive. While everything appeared hunky dory, an anti-climax came with Ibrahimโs Patrol breaking down. Preliminary checks on the spot suggested either a burnt clutch or a gear engagement problem. It was therefore decided to tow the car to the nearest roadhead. Intially Saif and later Ahmed handled the challenge and ultimately the Patrol was towed for some 70 kms and a recovery was arranged to come and pickup the Patrol.
All this had delayed even our lunch to 5pm and we remaining 4 cars alognwith carless Ibrahim rushed back to the sands to find an appropriate spot for the nights camp. But that was not to be since the almighty had laid out some other test for us. Triggered by one stuck in soft pushed back sand and rubble, all 4 cars got stuck one after another; and the recovery took more than 2 hours. Multiple tugs, pulls, coupled with the impressive push by Ibrahim to the big dead tree trunk were the highlights of the moment. Poor Ibrahim could never reach the campsite and had to rush back as the recovery truck gave an arrival call.
Finally we spotted a decent campsite at about 9 or so but the day was not yet over. Tyre popout and two small recoveries had to be done before the Lions picked up their sundowners. Naved with Sheen and another friend joined us for the camp and next dayโs drive. Last but not the least event of the day was an hill climb attempt by Naved at 11 PM followed by a recovery by Saif. What an appropriate finishing touch to an eventful day.
Day three started with a sumptuous breakfast at the Humeem cafรฉ followed by a drive on a route popularly called the Spider Trail. Nice dunes, nice slipfaces, nice stucks, fantastic recoveries continued till the last moment. Finally we sat under cool shade in a nice oasis and had our lunch. Oh yes, the boys got a an opportunity for open air shower/dip in a big tube well tub. It was time to go over to the nearest roadhead at about 2PM. Inflated and headed back home via the Car Musuem.
Thanks a lot for all participants and guests. Special thanks :thanks: to Ali for being a fantastic navigator to me; Ibrahim and Suri for the Clean Sweep; little boys for their ever enthusiastic run around, help and support.
