Just a question for all of you – I tried to go get a walkie for the trip as suggested by Ali and couldn’t find one anywhere in the mall of the emirates. The guy at RadioShack told me they are actually illegal in the UAE? Anyone know anything about this / where I can buy one (prefer the Sheikh Zayed road area if possible). Thanks!

By the way I have a friend who said he’s coming along – his name is Trevor, Jeep Wrangler Sahara 4 door. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t have the recovery equipment as his car is new, but I can lend him mine if he needs it. Ali – he joined the facebook group today.

    Hernan,

Your firend is more than welcome to come, he just has to register on the site first.. Recovery gear is not an issue, we all are there for help.

Regarding the Walikes, you got 2 options, either the Dragon Mart, or nayef souq/bur dubai Souq..

Man you and your friend are most welcome, as yamout said its better if he signed in.

For the walkie talkie you can check with Ziad Doleh he bought one last month.
Can you get one for me please? And I will pay you tomorrow, because I can’t find it in Abu Dhabi

    Hi Guys,

Cocerning walkie talkies, I did this exercise just a few days back, the motorolla ones are available at Nasr Square electronics market (down town dubai), the only issue is that you have to buy a pair as they do not sell single pce. and the cost for a decent range of max 2-3kms costs approx dhs 350-400 (on the box they mention 20-25miles,bullshit). It would have been an ideal situation if the pair was with two seperate chargers but its only one dual charger. I tried to check if there was a seperate charger available but couldnt find one. Pls note that there is only one model that you can buy seperate alongwith a charger but it hardly has any range, means its useless.

Ziad, which one did you buy and what price??

Omar, we both could have shared the a pair but as I mentioned above the issue is the single charger.

As Yammout mentioned, even I heard about Dragon Mart, there is a Chinese make available, single pce with charger for about dhs 200.00 and works well, the only issue is that you have to manually feed the frequency unlike others with pre fed frequencies.

Now the choices are very limited, either go for Dragon Mart’s product OR spend 400 to buy a pair and keep the second one with you in case if the battery is low on the first one.

Hope the above info would be of some help.

    Cheers
    Khalid

Hernan, we were in the similar situation as your friend is when we started the off road drives, dont bother yourself with recovery gear, eventually you or your friends would be equipped, and for the time being you have friends here who would be more than happy to assist.

    Welcome to the club.

Ahmad bhai whats the final plan, I mean when do we start and the route, do we stick to the initial one that you posted.

Yes Khalid bhai I and Ziyad we faced the same problem that why I decide to pay a pair for me and as you said will keep the second one as a spare.
Now I am using the second pair of Ziyad and I have to use the disposable battery model AAA.
As I remember Ziyad bought it for 350 or something like that but for sure less than 400.
Are you going to buy one today?

    May 1, 2008 at 8:29 am #3741

Yeah Omar, I wanted to buy one today but I would go to the dragon mart first to check the one available there just to check if it works well.

    would let you know later.

hernan dude, no worries just get ur 4×4 most of us have the gears, for your frnd for sure he’s more than welcome please ask him to register on the site so he’ll be familiar with the event and all.

    for the walkies:
i got the motorola 12 mile version, it’s good but doubt like khalid said that it’ll work that far bcs of dunes and all, i got it from fahidi street bur dubai for 320DHS again the problem is it’s 2 units with 1 charger!!! no seperate chargers available in the market, so u can use AAA battery just like me and omar r doing ( OFFCOARSE i kept the charger 🙂 ) after full charge the walkie will work for allmost 2 weeks which is good. i dont recommend the ones in dragon mall as they r not original i saw a couple didnt like it.

Thanks well I think I won’t have time to buy a walkie before the weekend, but otherwise I have all the recovery equipment. If we’re meeting at Dragon Mart tomorrow anyways I can just come a bit early and see the ones they have – if they’re not too bad and I can negotiate a good price then I’ll get one – otherwise I’ll go in radio silence for this trip and try to get it for the next one.

hernan buddy, usually we go convoy style so we make sure no one lose track, we make it one leader in the front and one in the bck and we make sure they have walkies so if any1 stuck they can comunicate.
