3.5 Litre, LWB GLS.
I’ve had a few good suggestions from the likes of Jo and other advanced drivers. Wanted to start this thread to consolidate some of the discussions…
Ok, so the problem is that both my engine and transmission have been overheating after I replaced the radiator . To be clear before this their was no issue, but temps have also slowly been climbing so I cant rule out that its just a radiator issue. I’ve swapped it out twice with new radiators in the last two weeks but still cant do afternoon drives without having to stop the convoy and let it cool down.
Overheating engine, I can keep under control by switching off AC and blowing hot air out of the engine, not ideal but not a show stopper.
Transmission overheating is the showstopper, I have some pictures below. One suggestion is a second oil cooler in series and maybe a fan on this as well (if it fits). IMG 2791. Any recommendations on who can fit this for me asap? I am too busy to attempt his myself.
How about the brand new stock radiator that was put in last week, its ~ 16mm wide on the main body which seems very narrow and low surface area for heat exchange… How wide are other Pajero owners radiators? IMG 2788
Last note is the huge AC condenser sitting right in front of my radiator, IMG 2792. Not being mechanically minded, I cant suggest alternatives if they exist for replacing this…. but it has to be contributing by restricting airflow.
Yes, the free flow K&N air filter will be pulling hot air from the engine bay which isn’t helping, but again, prior to the radiator puncture I never had a heating issue.
Again appreciate the comments and advice.
thanks
JasonMay 31, 2017 at 9:18 am #39282May be my experience is nothing to compare other big guys, but i still have some at the back with Pajero 3.0.
1) I would not recommend any filters as KN and so on, my personal experience with previous cars show good result only with turbo + cheep tuning + wider exhaust, only in this combination it will give u power. Otherwise its just making sound and problems for owner. I know at least 5 guys who lost engine on sand because its getting tiny dust or just breakdown and pulling all sand inside…. Good alternative is snorkel.
2) about overheating – it depends how u use RPM and which gear is mainly use for offloading, are u driving Low gear? also did u check waterpamp and valve on cooling system?
3) are u first owner of the car?quote jasonm post_id=44589 time=1496219121 user_id=25240:Ok, so the problem is that both my engine and transmission have been overheating after I replaced the radiator . JasonConsidering the above it appears that there cud be air in the cooling system of your pajero. Try burping the radiator.
Sorry to hear that you’re having issues. Seems strange that even after changing the radiator the problem is still there, which probably means the issue is elsewhere.
A few things to check:
1) Thermostat
2) Water and oil pumps
3) Flushing the cooling system, even though you have a new radiator, there may be blockages elsewhere. Then make sure there is no air in the system.
4) Change oil in transmission, unfortunately a lot of dealerships out here will not change the transmission oil (most will say lifetime) but considering the driving style whilst in the desert i would recommend changing every 30,000 km at least.
Hopefully you find a solution soon 🙂
p.s if you do like the induction noise of the filter i would suggest looking at afe pro dry s filters, better than k&n, easier to maintain and clean with there specialized wash kit. (never use foam filter out here, not good with sand and the heat destroys them)
Good luck.July 17, 2017 at 9:13 am #39510Hi Jason,
Am sorry to know you still have this issue.
I still remember the problem you had in Fujeirah then in the drive with Joe.
It is one of the worst headache that any off road lover don’t wish to have.
Anyways, I had what it seems to be a similar case before, but, in different type of vehicle which is Honda Accord.
The system wasn’t provide enough cooling in summer.
The reason was weak water cycling cause of blockages and valve failure.
So, flushing and replacing valve solved the problem.
Just wanted to share the experience, and good luck. -
