We had a nice trip to Salalah in last Summer(You can make out the climate difference between UAE and Salalah from the photographs). To avoid long drive we flew to Muscat and from there we had taken a 2010 model Manual Land Cruiser and drove to Salalah. I drove at 200 – 210km/hr and reached in Salalah within 7hrs time. Really enjoyed driving the manual one. We took a Beach Front Villa(with all hotel facilities) in Samharam Tourist Village(http://www.haffahousesalalah.com/samharam.htm). Nice place to stay, people like me, who doesn’t like the hotel environment. You really feel home away home. 3 days we roam around Salalah then returned to Muscat.

Distance from Muscat – 1030 km
Average drive time – 12 hours by road, (1 hour by flight)

Salalah has the benefit of the annual Indian monsoon: locally known as the Khareef. This monsoon, which extends from early June to mid September, transforms the countryside into a veritable garden with tumbling waterfalls and meandering streams. The Khareef season is a good time to visit Salalah. In July and August the government plays host for the annual Khareef Festival, a cultural highlight of the season. This year it was from 21/06/2012 to 21/07/2012.

The Salalah Tourists’ Attractions includes the beaches and garden, springs and mountain, the remnants of the ancient historic cities, and many others.

    Places to Visit:
    Mughsayl Beach & Marneef Cave
is 40 kilometers west to the town of Salalah. It is a beautiful golden beach with blow holes (natural fountain), magnificent view of the sea, rough mountains and cliffs.
Prophet Emran’s Tomb are situated near the Clock Tower. Prophet Emran is the father of the Biblical prophet, Moses. The Tomb is 30 meters long.
Nabi Ayub tomb is a famous tomb in Salalah.
Frankincense, a World heritage location of UNESCO organization is yet another major Salalah Tourists’ Attractions. It is located in the down town of Salalah near Khor Rohri. It is about 37 kilometers from Salalah.
Ubar at Shisr that is thought to be the area of lost city is also near to it.
The ruins of the ancient cities of Al-Blaid and Samhuram are also a part of the tourists’ attractions in Salalah.
The springs like Ain Sahnot, Ain Rzat and Ain Hamran are the famous springs in Salalah.
Then there is the Magic Road that one would find in between Tagha and Mirbat. It is interesting to know that on this hilly land if you drive your car and let it roll down in neutral gear, the car would start rolling up instead of rolling down.
Wadi Dirbat, home to an amazing variety of plants, trees and flowers. See the longest cave in the world, a natural sink hole over 100 metres wide and 250 metres deep. Nestled in a hidden valley is the Baobab Forest with huge bulbous trees, one tree over 2000 years old and 30 feet in diameter at its base. See the fantastic views of the Dhofari Coastline and the Indian Ocean from Jebel Samhan.

When you are visiting Wadis, Mountains and Caves just take precaution about flying insects stings. Those are poisonous enough to make irritation on your skin. You can get an ointment from the pharmacies in Salalah for this. Before visiting such places get one or two packets of this ointment.

Have a nice trip and safe drive.
