It is a plastic Bottle like thingy which is attached to the air filter Box in most the the Vehicles. It usually can be fine under the left or right fender (depending on the position of Air filter Box) just under the Plastic Fire Wall / cover.
Its basic function is to reduce the Sound of Air Intake, and to keep the water away from the filter box incase you car submerged in water until the air Box Opening level.
So what if we remove this Resonator?
Well nothing serious, You vehicle Sound will be increased, Just a little specially when accelerating hard, which can be ignored. There will be definitely a small increase in initial Pickup,
And that’s it.
The Negs are, You filter will get Dirty Quite soon, in desert a lot of sand will enter in you air filter box, but if your filter id a good one and properly sealers in the box, then this should not be much problem. Since there is a sensor on most the resonator which plays part in providing the correct mixture of air and fuel. Therefore your fuel consumption may be disturbed. Actually I in my experience didn’t notice change.
There is a further modification you can do in this setup, You can create a tunner like structure leading from the front end of the vehicle directly into the air filter box, this will give you a RAM air effect. This means a lot of cold air will pass through which will certainly effect you power and acceleration, but again these effects will not be huge that you instantly notice. Bu this setup will definitely be a disadvantage in sande. Because it will allow loads of sand to directly go into the air box and clogge you filter,
I would not recommend an Oil based filter with this setup and for tha matter with any setup, if you are driving in desert.
Just though to share my knowledge and personal experience,
