So I hv the honour of being the first to post impressions from this drive, my second drive.
It was nice to see so many cars and I loved the fact that it was in the morning. Being in the desert early is something that I enjoy. I hope more drives for learners will be in the morning. Its better for us as it not that crowded out there at that time.

Getting back to the drive itself I started again on the wrong foot. My tyre pressure tool was not an accurate one and until Fossil Rock I struggled a bit without getting stuck properly. Musbah noticed that my tyre pressure was not right and went straight away to my tyres and deflated them down to 14. I had around 19-20. So….dont buy cheap tool for the tyre pressure….

After Fossil Rock it was a different story altogether. With the right pressure I didnt have any more problems, exept once when I got stuck and lead marshall came to help. My only excuse is that Imran also got stuck at ten same time so I wasnt the only one at that time. 🙂 Anyway, we didnt waste much time as it took just a few minutes to get out with Thanseer’s skills.

Compared to the first drive(also a newbee one), this one was with a higher level of difficulty and more challanging. Also, the pace was a bit faster. I had the chance to be the third and that helped because I could see exactly how lead marshall was approaching the dunes and follow in his steps. I belive that made it easier for me this time. Got lost once for a few minutes only. I was waiting for the car in front of me to clear the dune and when I passed it there was no more cars on the other side. 😕 Great to have a radio guys, I just told them to wait and that was it, I found them shortly. Anyway, better to get lost for a few minutes rather than not wait for the car in front to cleat the path.

Dont know what happened with the second part of the convoy as I was faraway most of the time, hope everybody had good fun.
When we reached the last big dune(forgot its name, not camel rock) we had a nice chat with thanseer, ahmad and the others. Thanseer told us that the drive was not a normal newbee drive, was a wee bit more difficult, a confirmation of my earlier impressions.
Some of us didnt wait for the rest of the convoy to reach that last big dune and we left home, sorry I didnt get the chance to say good bye to everybody. I have the excuse of working tonight.

It was a good drive, learnt a bit more and looking forward to the next one.

    Hi Hamza,
I am afraid you think too highly of me by going into all these details. Nevertheless managed to get the location.

I’m not familiar with that area, if anybody can fish me out in their way to the meeting point I’d be very greatful. Im live in Barsha/Tecom area. I can come anywhere on someone’s way to drive together there.
    thanks!

    hi guys,

Got myself a radio from the indicated shop in Dragon Mart.
Just a bit of update on price. The Motorola radio is now 220dhs and although I tried to go down to 200dhs and mentioned DO, I endep up paying 220dhs. Its ok, I guess.
One of the girls in the shop also set it up for me, I had the list of frequencies with me. It looked like an easy job, I hope it ll work fine and looking forward to the next drive I can attend.

Thanks for the feedbacks from Mitch & David :thanks:

Near to pink rock, we had a pop out by Mitch. As he said it was done intentionally to test the Marshal’s skills and to provide a live demo to other convoy members :)) We fixed it very quickly and proceeded to Pink Rock 🙂
We spend good time at Pink Rock and everyone got enough opportunity to play around :

Mitch, you are a very good observer and quick learner, very long way ahead.

Look forward to drive with you all again and see you soon again in sands 🙂 🙂 🙂

    My pleasure.

Yes, the pop out was done on purpose so everyone can learn. 😉 Hope everybody appreciates my effort. In addition to that, more learning point when this happens, expect to have a strong vibration in your sterring wheel once you are back on the road. When the tyre pops out, sand will go inside and that will unbalance the wheel quite a lot, the more sand the more vibration as I came to know.
Best thing to do is to stop at the first tyre shop, get them to remove the tyre, clean it, balance it and put it back on. I decided to drive home at a slower cruising speed as I was going to work after the drive and fixed the next day. It turned out I didnt have just sand inside but a small dune. About 1-2kg of sand. The fixing takes no more than 10 min and costs you 30 dhs. If they want to charge you more just go to another place.

The playing time at the pink rock was very nice. Really enjoyed going up a few times. Id like to go there again, especially on a less busy day so I can explore a bit more around the place.

Thanks again everybody and well done rescuing the kid.

    Hi guys,

Great day out for me today. Thanks everyone for the help and good organisation. This is the kind of scene you want for starting off-roading.

It was my first drive so I’m gonna post my experience for other ppl who want to try and wanna know what is like.

First of all make sure the traction control is off before you start. In my car (Prado) you got to press the button and hold it until two icons came on your dash. I didn’t know that. I just pressed the button once and got on icon saying trc off however was still on. As a result I started the drive with ESP on and felt it however I was confused as the icon on my dash was saying is off. I asked Saif why I’m getting my power cut up the dune and he told me to hold the button pressed for couple of secs to switch off the trc. Which I did and after that it was a lot easier.

Another thing I learnt is that you really have to wait till the car in front of you clears the dune completely, especially on the way up. I sometimes didn’t wait enough and when the car in front of me had some difficulty I had to slow down and lost my momentum. As a result I got stuck, had to stop and reverse couple of times because of that.

Another thing is that is really good to have a Walkie talkie. I didn’t have one but half way through one kind gentleman lent me one and I could see the difference. Apart from getting help over it you just know what’s going on the convoy, why it stopped etc. you might think you don’t need one cos its you first drive but you do, especially cos its your first drive.

My tire came off the rim at some point and I don’t really know why. I was told that it can happen to anyone, sometimes when you hit something harder with your wheel.
I got to thank again Saif and the rest for fixing it for me. I’d like to say that it was done on purpose so everyone else could see how it gets fixed but that was not the case.

On the way to the Pink Rock I drove using semi-automatic, changing the gears with + and – selector. On the way back I drove all the way in automatic in D and found it easier. Although I drove manuals all my life and Im aware you can control the car better with manual shifting, for my first drive I found it easier in full automatic. I can only assume its because of my lack of experience. It lets me focus more on the track and getting the right approach.

This is as much as I can recall for now, hope my impression will help others before they start.

I really enjoyed it and Im aware I just got a taste of it for now. Looking forward for the next drive.

    Cheerio

A wee photo of the experience.
