Well… there are people who drive corollas over dunes… so I don’t think it’s about the car.. it’s about the driver.
If you put the same driver in a Pajero, an Xterra and an FJ, I think he will do better in an FJ, mostly ‘cos the FJ compromises in other places such as size and weight that help it.
Yes. Dune bashing has very little do with cars, more to do with drivers. The 3L 5door may feel underpowered if you are trying to go up a steep incline, but will do the job with enough momentum.
Gen4 (current shape) has a plastic mud guards attached to the front bumper. They will bend and scrape the tires if you hit a steep dune. The rear bumper silver insert scoops sand and will break off after a couple of trips.
You can get the front mud guards cut off (increases wind noise at speeds above 120kph) and steel gaurds riveted on. This will be invisible.
For the rear, you need a metal bar/plate made and screwed on (can be removed anytime).
Check with Tarfana garage 06 5436051 / 050 7694183. Approx cost 600aed.
You FJ fan boys…. it’s all about 3.5ltr – 4ltr – 5ltr…blah blah. 🙂
Just make sure the car’s been serviced well (clean the carb/injectors), siams you’ve got and now you’ll have to learn to drive… LOL.
If the maliha shabab can tear up the dunes in their Vitaras, am sure you don’t need the power or the tech – just an eye for the dunes. That you’ve got.
Welcome to the club MitsuBoy!!
Having learnt pretty much everything I know about sand driving from the Coffeeman, I find it unbelievable that he could misread a dune that badly…
Even my dad (who was Roshan’s passenger on one drive) said that Roshan is far too safe a driver for this to have been due to carelessness or rash driving!
As for this other club, they practice self censorship and won’t discuss this online… so we won’t know if this could have been avoided or if this was caused due to bad leadership (i.e. not communicating a bad drop or having someone mark it while the convoy crosses – when two cars have accidents on the same trip… some questions need to be asked).
Thank God that they’re both ok…
CWR 15 May09 – Trip Brief
This CWR was actually a CWOR, with Roshan missing-in-action due to his beloved FJC being delivered late at the end of her sojourn at the AFM Resort & Spa.
With three avid members out to get their weekly fix, the drive started out at 0500hrs from the Emarat Petrol Station on Sharjah-Kalba Rd.
The entry point was only a few kilometers up the road from the pump and after a quick deflation, we entered at 0520hrs, just in time to see the sun rise.
The benefits of a small convoy were readily apparent as the drive, lead by Humsafar, was quick and sporty. The only downside was the terrain was littered with bushes, dead wood, abandoned construction, cinder blocks, metal rods, barbed wire (!!)… so there was a great degree of technical driving involved.
Considering that we were all hungry for a little side sloping, Humsafar lead us across some very long slip faces where we were able to side slope to our heart’s content.
Recoveries were quick and efficient, with Humsafar getting stuck twice and Shan cresting once and getting a rear popout while side sloping. Wrangler was there to help pull us out and did a great job bringing up the rear as sweep. The popout was reseated, inflated and the drive resumed within 30min.
Exit was at 0900hrs, after over 3hrs of high adrenaline driving…
Here are some of the photographs taken by my guest, Simran, who used this opportunity to polish his photography skills and gave us some really good action shots.
